Linux is an Operating System which build up on Linux Kernel with other Linux apps. So Kernel is the core of an OS. Linux Kernel is a Unix like OS Kernel. Linux Kernel was developed and created by Linus Torvalds in 1991 and that’s why the OS named as Linux. First prototype of Linux were released in 1991 and Version 1.0 was released on March 1994.
Now the latest stable version of Linux Kernel available is 4.7.5. Lot of Linux based distributions are available. Fedora (Red Hat), openSUSE (SUSE) and Ubuntu (Canonical Ltd.), Debian, Slackware, Gentoo, Arch Linux etc are some examples. But most important achievement and one of the best gift given by Linux to the world is “Embedded Linux”. Now in world almost all the electronic devices are controlled by Linux OS.
There is a big community who contributes for the development of Linux kernel. Linux is an open source. It comes under GNU General Public License (GPL) which is a free Software license.
